In May 2021, it was announced by Openreach that Full Fibre (FTTP) Connectivity would be available to 25 million homes by 2026. With this extra 5 million premises being added to the overall rollout total this year, it seems this target is on its way to being met.
What is FTTP Connectivity?
FTTP, also known as Full Fibre, is a broadband connection that is carried through a fibre optic cable from the nearest exchange. This broadband option is quickly replacing the traditional copper connections of ADSL and FTTC connections due to better performance and faster speeds, even at the busiest times.
What is the Current Status of the Rollout?
Currently, Openreach has covered over 5 million homes in the UK, with 1.9 million of these being added during 2020/21. Looking at these statistics more closely, this rollout has been adding new premises at a rate of 43,000 per week.
This will have to increase if they are to reach 25 million homes by the end of 2026, which is over 80% of the total UK premises, to 75,000 per week. The bigger picture states that it is not just big towns and cities that will be seeing FTTP connectivity added to their homes, but hard-to-reach rural areas will also get to experience the benefits too.
How to Check If You Will Get FTTP Connectivity
Although it isn’t available everywhere yet, there are ways in which you can check whether it is available to you. As mentioned above, coverage will include 80% of the UK premises, so it is likely you and your home and your office will be able to receive FTTP connectivity.
