Businesses across the UK, as well as on a global scale, are reliant on technology for their everyday operations and often store their data in the cloud. This means that reliable internet connections are vital, especially when businesses obtain multiple office locations.
Both broadband and a leased line are available options, but what are the differences?
Broadband can be compared to your domestic internet service as it is a shared connection where speeds vary on the type of link, the number of users and the distance from the local exchange. Generally, the longer the copper cable connection, the slower the speed.
The majority of the country has access to fibre optic broadband, but connections still vary as they can be delivered in different ways: cable, satellite, mobile, fibre and copper cables. For example, if using FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) the speed will depend on the distance between the user and the ‘cabinet’, whereas if using standard ASDL the speed will depend on the distance between the user and the exchange.
Downloads are faster than uploads when using broadband which makes it perfect for browsing, email and streaming. Broadband connections are readily available and run over an analogue line so the SLA (service level agreement) is reliant on standard BT response times which is why it comes at a lower cost than a leased line.
A leased line is a dedicated connection where speeds do not vary on the number people using it as it is exclusive to your premises. It is a direct connection between your premises and the local exchange and, with a fixed bandwidth, upload and download speeds are equal and consistent.
Even though leased lines are more expensive than broadband, the connection is reliable and will maintain its performance no matter how many individuals are using it. It has a bigger price tag because a leased line has a higher level SLA which guarantees fast response times, fast fix times and constant monitoring. Overall, it is perfect for large amounts of voice and data traffic and will give you peace of mind that you will always have guaranteed, direct internet access.
