By now, you have probably heard that BT are switching off their ISDN network and migrating their customers to an IP network.
Although this will not be happening until 2025, this change will affect a large number of businesses around the UK. Is your business ready?
Integrated Services Digital Network, ISDN, has been used by BT since the 1980’s; it delivers voice and data services simultaneously on digital lines. However, due to technology constantly evolving, ISDN is being phased out.
Although it was regularly updated, ISDN is designed in a very old-fashioned way, so the maintenance and running costs are out of date. It is obvious that we need to modernise our telecom systems and, with the introduction of fibre lines and high-speed broadband, we can now do that.
So, if you currently have a ISDN/PSTN-based system for your business, now is a good time to start looking into the new, alternative options of IP telephony and cloud-based solutions. This includes a VoIP/SIP hosted system:
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a result of the advanced high-speed internet connection as it is completely digital and transmits telephone calls over an IP network. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is an extension of VoIP, simplifying the process of making outgoing calls, allowing users to call on a global scale.
Some of the benefits that IP telephony could bring to your business are:
As mentioned before, the only setup will be on-site equipment if necessary, otherwise it will just include implementing the required software. On top of this, the overall maintenance is much simpler than a traditional telephone system.
Add or remove users as and when you need and take your phone number wherever you go because as long as you have an internet connection, you can make and receive calls.
Whatever you choose to do, don’t panic! There is still plenty of time to organise your telephone system, so just take this news as an opportunity to explore your options.
